WAVE ON WAVE

by Gladys

Titanic power, wave on wave

of iridescent green to blue

and every shimmering hue between.

Reflective of a fishing hook;

you crook, curve, cast a bronzed Adonis

towards me on the strand;

and wash my murky dreams

With gilded seaspray

Bright in golden sunlight.

Once upon a time you gripped the earth

in tortuous vice of squealing ice;

then Diana tossed, turned the tide,

dipping down inside your Jang and Jin

to impart a softer, gentler melting heart

which bore

that first amoeba,

and cast it on lifes' eager shore.

Now, you nurture creatures in your secret deep

which eat, sleep, co-exist  - in order to survive.

They do not thrive - on war, power or greed.

For these they have no need.

Yet man, infant of the evolutionary chain,

impels from early cave to watery grave,

His learning still to gain

Will Nature and the Universe conspire,

to balance our polarities with flood and fire

as, with indecent haste,

we commit ourselves to another frozen waste,

If universal laws of responsibility and cause

we choose to bend

do we compute and programme certain end

thus for our sins,

self-condemned

we wait - until once more it all begins.
